HSC: ‘we leave it as late as possible to postpone ops’

DECISIONS to postpone procedures are left as late as possible because of how quickly occupancy levels change at the hospital, a spokesman for Health & Social Care has said.

The committee had to cancel one further non-emergency operation yesterday as bed occupancy exceeded 94%. It follows three cancellations last week due to winter pressures.

The spokesman explained how frequently occupancy levels are reviewed and what measures are taken when a 'red alert' [over 91%] is issued.

‘In preparation, all the following week’s procedures are reviewed on Friday by the admissions team to consider likely bed capacity issues and identify any procedures that could be done through day patients if necessary, therefore preventing the possibility of cancellation.

‘The bed situation is reviewed twice a day minimum – more frequently if necessary. If capacity is over 91% with the potential that it will remain, we follow our escalation policy and consider postponing operations,’ they said.
