The post-mortem was carried out yesterday by a pathologist from the UK Home Office.

DNA and other samples were sent to the UK last night for further forensic examination, which is hoped will confirm whether or not the remains are Mikus Alps, the missing man who owns the vehicle.

'We have requested these tests are expedited and we hope to receive the results early next week, at which point we will issue a further update,' said Police chief Patrick Rice.

'The letter purporting to be from Mr Alps has also been sent to the UK for analysis from a handwriting expert. The result of this analysis is likely to take several weeks.’
