More than 100 went to the doctor last week with the complaint, up from 10 on the week beginning 11 December.

It is one illustration of the winter pressure being put on the health service.

A dedicated winter pressures working group meets weekly to ensure activity, backlog, capacity and demand both within the hospital and community settings are monitored closely.

Health & Social Care said occupancy in the Princess Elizabeth Hospital stood at 78 out of 108 total beds, or 72%, at 8am yesterday, compared with 101 beds (92%) occupied at the same peak time last week.

Last week, one non-urgent operation was deferred due to capacity issues, compared with three the previous week. Another non-urgent case was cancelled due to an emergency.
