Maintenance of Gents’ Pool to be done by public-private partnership
AFTER four years of hard work by volunteers and fundraisers, the Gents’ Pool at La Vallette was officially reopened yesterday.
However, the responsibility for the pools going forward is likely to continue to fall on the goodwill of islanders, as it was announced there will be a public/private partnership to look after the long-term maintenance of the pools.
The Victorian bathing pools were battered by storms in 2014, with the Gents and Horseshoe pools bearing the brunt of the weather.
Culture and Leisure – which at the time had responsibility for the pools – said it could not afford to look after them.
The La Vallette Legacy Team has worked with volunteers and businesses, as well as companies and sponsors, to get the work done.
Apart from £10,000 – which was used for the steel railings – all the money for the repairs came from donations.
