Deputy Fallaize, who led the alternative 11-18 education model through the States last month, beat off competition from former ESC vice-president Carl Meerveld by 23 votes to 17.

The Vale deputy's candidacy received a ringing endorsement from Policy & Resource president Deputy Gavin St Pier, who said Deputy Fallaize had long shown the potential to lead a principal committee.

The job as ESC president will be 'the toughest job in Guernsey politics' in the years ahead and Deputy Fallaize's claims were 'head and shoulders above' any other member of the States.

If successful, Deputy Meerveld said he would have presented an alternative three-school model so that like-for-like, detailed proposals could be brought back to the States.

His vision for a two-school model would have been two 1,200 capacity 11-16 schools and a tertiary college.

Deputy Fallaize later had all four of his chosen members elected onto the committee with him – Deputies Richard Graham, Mark Dorey, Rhian Tooley and Peter Roffey. They were seconded by Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq.

Deputy Lester Queripel was also proposed but polled the lowest number of votes. He had been proposed by Deputy Peter Ferbrache and seconded by Deputy Laurie Queripel.
