Prison smoking ban has led to better behaviour

THERE has been a reduction in misconduct and discipline offences since the prison became smoke-free in 2013.

The smoking ban which was introduced at Les Nicolles in 2013 has led to a reduction in misconduct.

Tobacco was banned at Les Nicolles on New Year’s Day 2013.

‘There were a number of initiatives rolled out at the same time which included increased purposeful activity and the use of disposable electronic cigarettes,’ said deputy governor Lou Arkle.

‘The combined result has seen a reduction in instances of offences against discipline, self-harm, bullying, and use of segregation.’

Les Nicolles was only the second prison in Europe to go smoke-free, behind the one in the Isle of Man, which took the step in 2008.
