Transport minister, art museum and seafront casino ideas suggested

GUERNSEY should have its own Guggenheim or Louvre art museum and consider a seafront casino to attract visitors – and appoint a transport minister to improve links.

The ‘achievable’ vision was put forward by Stretch Kontelj, a former mayor of a 230,000-strong city in Australia, who now lives and works in Guernsey, during an address to the Guernsey Institute of Directors (IoD) lunch yesterday.

‘A possible idea to help drive visitors to Guernsey as a destination is a world-class museum and art gallery. We could aspire to have a Guggenheim or Louvre art gallery combined with a Victor Hugo museum right here in Guernsey. That would be an international tourist draw card and destination for short stay visitors from the UK and Europe, and would also be a “must see” for cruise ship passengers.’

Dr Kontelj was invited to speak after being asked to reflect on Guernsey’s position in the world, its challenges and his suggestions for the island based on his 17 years of experience as an elected politician in Australia.
