Assistant harbourmaster Mike Galliott said that, although it is early in the process, the work appeared to be on target.

‘The dredger is working very well, coping with the conditions and it’s going according to plan,’ he said.

Work by the Danish-registered Margrethe Fighter after it was delayed coming from Shoreham because of the weather.

The six-week operation will see the removal of silt build-up which will reduce risks of boats grounding in the harbour.

It has been estimated that up to 23,000 cubic meters of material will be removed and places in deeper water in other areas of the harbour.

Costs are expected to be £200,000 and work will cover the Victoria Marina, between the Albert and Victoria Piers, and two areas next to the marina entrance in what is known as The Pool.
