‘It’s like a digital paper’

MORE than 4,200 islanders are ‘doing life differently’, having downloaded the local information app GY4 You.

The app allows users to keep track of local goings-on and is full of information such as arrivals and departures at the airport and harbour, the latest developments in the job and property markets, local events and even the latest breaking news.

It can also be specially tailored to deliver the information users want the most.

One person to download GY4 You is local boxing star Billy Le Poullain, the newly-crowned Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year.

‘The app is very impressive,’ said Billy, 22, who is just weeks away from competing in his first Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast.

‘It has everything you need there, it is like a digital paper really, all the information you need you can find really easily.

‘When I’m away sparring in the UK at weekends, I have used it to check the weather back home to know whether I can get out on the roads when I get back to do a training run.’

Le Poullain has quickly emerged as one of Guernsey’s and, indeed, the Channel Islands’ biggest sporting stars after shining on the national stage.

His is a story of perseverance after the Birmingham-born, Alderney-raised lad lost his first five fights but since then, his hard work has seen him put together a stunning sustained spell of form.

It all culminated last year in reaching the semi-finals of the national ABA championships in the 69kg welterweight division, where he narrowly lost out to the No. 1 seed.

That performance saw him fulfil the qualification criteria for the Commonwealth Games and when he competes in April, he will be the first boxer ever to represent Guernsey in a Games.
