Only a quarter of KGV benches left to sponsor

THREE-QUARTERS of the concrete benches at the KGV playing fields have now been allocated as sports fans get behind the initiative.

The site is currently undergoing a major facelift.

Work to replace the old pavilion with new changing rooms has been completed, while improvements have also been being made to the downstairs rooms of the main clubhouse.

KGV fundraising committee member Philippa Stahelin said there were 40 concrete benches around the pitch and nearly 30 of them had now been sponsored.

‘Sometimes it has been families and sometimes individuals,’ she said.

Islanders have sometimes chosen to adopt a bench in their favourite spot where they have enjoyed watching matches for years.

Work has been progressing well inside the clubhouse. The Spensley Room was expanded last year and now is regularly used by U3A, Weight Watchers and Guernsey Concert Brass. At the front of the building, overlooking the pitch, work on the ground floor is progressing well.

KGV project chairman Stuart Falla said they had not yet started on the upstairs area and there was still a lot of fundraising to do.

‘We’ve raised about £2m. with a mixture of loans and donations, but we still have a similar amount to go,’ he said.

‘But this site has massive benefits to the community.’

He said it was wonderful to see so many different sports utilising the grass and 3G pitches, including cricket, rugby and touch rugby, both during the week and at weekends.

Sponsoring a bench costs £10,000.
