He worked in the UK before moving to Guernsey 16 years ago.

He was headmaster at Castel Primary before moving to La Houguette in 2015.

‘I’ve enjoyed everything about being here,’ he said.

‘I’ve enjoyed being part of the western community, which has been fabulous. I have worked with some fabulous children and great parents and great teachers.’

He said there was a real sense of community in the western parishes.

‘It’s the togetherness – the sense that all the people are working together. The floral group, Styx, St Saviour’s Community Centre – everyone works together to create the best environment for the children,’ he commented.

He added that he was most proud of fostering that togetherness.

‘We’ve done a lot of work to bring the community back into the school,’ he said.

‘We now involve the parents more.’

The school has grown over the last two years from 230 pupils to 275, ranging from Reception to Year 6. But it is still one of the the smallest primary schools in the island.

‘As with all schools, the challenge is to make the learning enjoyable,’ he said.

‘We are also in a period of change in education.’

Richard will be moving to become head teacher of Elizabeth College Junior School, which includes Acorn House and Beechwood.

His last day at La Houguette will be 28 March.

‘A new school is always a challenge for me,’ he said.

‘I am looking forward to working with the children, the parents and the staff.’

After Easter current St Martin’s School deputy head Claire Judd will be moving to La Houguette as the new head teacher.
