People’s choice awards from Eisteddfod arts and crafts are presented
THE Eisteddfod’s people’s choice prizes have been presented by the Bailiff, Sir Richard Collas.
The winners, First Steps Pre-School and Notre Dame Du Rosaire Primary School, were decided by public vote at the Eisteddfod’s arts and crafts showcase.
First Steps in Mont Arrive was presented with a £50 craft voucher, for its project themed around a Peppa Pig recycling book.
Anne-Marie Scheffer, from the nursery, said the pre-school always themed its entry around a chosen book.
‘Every year we theme our entry around a book, and this year we chose Peppa Pig’s Recycling Fun,’ she said.
‘Every child here took part in their own way, from the youngest to the eldest.
‘It’s a lovely surprise to win something, everyone tried really hard, and it was a real team effort.’
The children were inspired by a visit from States staff, who talked to them about waste prevention.
First Steps staff member Tracey Wrigley said the children were already helping with recycling at home.
‘It’s really good to teach children about recycling so it becomes natural for them from an early age,’ she said.
‘Parents have told us that their children actively help with recycling at home, and they all love Peppa Pig so it was a great match for our project.’
Notre Dame won the People’s Choice Trophy for its submission themed around trees.
Head teacher Peter McGovern said the children enjoyed taking part and the school would display the project for the public to see.
‘Every class made a contribution, and they all loved getting involved,’ he said.
‘Our hall here is also the parish hall, so we will leave it on show for the rest of the school year for everyone to see.’
Mr McGoven added: ‘Art isn’t really about competition, but it’s a lovely gesture and nice to have our school’s name on the trophy.’
