The smallest consecrated chapel in the world has been the subject of restoration works after major structural failings were discovered in the St Andrew’s building.

It has been the mission of the Little Chapel Foundation to restore it to its former glory and it was well-received yesterday as it re-opened with a flower festival, Easter egg hunt and string quartet.

Alison Green, Eric Storto and his son Hugo, 7, were in Guernsey visiting friends.

‘I enjoy looking around these mythological spaces and this one has an interesting religious connotation to it,’ said Miss Green.

Hugo was having fun exploring the chapel and its gardens.

‘I have already found four Easter eggs,’ he said.

The chapel was very busy as islanders and visitors took the opportunity to look around.

‘I think it is beautiful and we are very grateful to the people who have put in all of their time and effort into this project,’ said Lynn Breban.

Marion Le Friec added: ‘The flowers in the chapel are absolutely beautiful and the pebbled floor looks lovely. Every corner of it [the chapel] has a different perspective.’

Little Chapel Foundation chairman John Silvester said they had a clear five-year plan aimed at transforming the chapel into one of the island’s ‘premier tourist destinations’ by completing the restoration, upgrading the gardens and parking and potentially opening a cafe and shop.

The foundation, which was gifted the chapel from the De La Salle brothers in August 2016, is grateful for all of the donations that have helped to transform the chapel from the ‘disastrous’ state it was in several years ago.

There is no charge to enter the chapel, however donations are appreciated.
