New volunteers are invited to challenge disability stigma
AN ACTIVITY group for people with disabilities is looking for volunteers and sponsors to help it reach as many people as possible.

Guernsey Mobility Let’s Go meets once a week at Beau Sejour to take part in specially designed activities like softball, tennis, bowling, catch, discus and football, aimed at getting people with disabilities more active.
It was started by Janina Almeida and coach Paul Wheatley three years ago.
With the help of more volunteers and sponsorship, team captain Miss Almeida would like the group to be able to continue with what they are doing, but also try new things.
‘We have two blind players who need specialist equipment to take part, so we need more sponsors to help pay for new equipment and the rental of the hall,’ she said.
‘We need more volunteers to help us organise these events. Anyone can help, the more the better, and then we can start other activities as well.’
Emily Nuttall, a volunteer for five months, said she enjoyed volunteering with the group as it was good to see them having a good time.
‘Come and volunteer, you get to help people and it’s great exercise,’ she said.
‘There is a stigma around disability, but these people can do more than you’d think.
‘It’s encouraging to see these wonderful people, getting engaged and getting exercise, it’s just lovely to see them so happy.’
Miss Almeida added that softball tennis was her favourite game to take part in.
‘I like playing the softball tennis because we all get to take our anger out in a fun way, although it can get very competitive.’
