Horton seventh in men's road race

GUERNSEY’S Tobyn Horton was involved in the final sprint and finished seventh in the men’s cycling road race at the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast this morning.

He was given the same time as the winner, Australia's Steele Von Hoff,

Teammate James McLaughlin had made a brave bid for a medal.

He broke away from the main field with England’s Tom Stewart and they stayed clear of the peloton until 13 kilometres from the end when they were caught on a steep climb by the New Zealand riders.

McLaughlin faded after that and finished just over two minutes behind the winner

In athletics, Sarah Mercier ran outside her personal best on a humid day in the women's 5,000 metres to finish 16th in 17-00.52.
