Motorists who have left vehicles at the Castel estate for long periods of time have been sent a letter asking for them to be moved.

Those left will be removed by police, in a similar exercise to the one undertaken recently at Vale Church.

Roads Policing Unit sergeant Tom Marshall said the clearance at Vale Church was the start of a larger campaign and that Les Genats Estate would be next to receive similar action.

‘This is a large estate with a number of residents whose quality of life is currently being affected by the number of vehicles which have been parked in public areas for long periods of time,’ he said.

‘Cars which are parked without third party insurance, or are considered to be unroadworthy, will be identified and marked over the coming days.’

He said registered owners had been written to and offences would be reported for consideration of prosecution.

‘Under the law, no court approval is needed for this process, we can remove any vehicle which appears to be abandoned,’ he said.

‘Such vehicles take up valuable space in often limited parking areas and as well as breaking the law, the vehicle owner’s actions have a negative effect on the ambience of the surrounding area.’

The work that was undertaken at Vale Church car park took a couple of weeks and resulted in nine vehicles identified as potentially abandoned.

Three of those were removed by their owners before the deadline and there have been no abandoned vehicles in the area since.
