The traditional big-top circus, featuring performers from all over the world, is set up at Victoria Avenue until Sunday.

There will be two shows daily during the week, with three on Saturday and a further two on Sunday afternoon.

General manager and ringmaster Robert Price said ordinarily the circus visited the island every few years but the success in 2017 meant it was returning for a second consecutive year.

‘We have a new ‘‘double space wheel’’ this year, there’s lots of danger and high-flying acts as well as award-winning juggler from Portugal Roberio Goncalves and Andrea [Delbosq], one of Europe’s leading female clowns,’ he said.

There are 25 performers and 10 support staff in the island who visited after last performing in Macclesfield.

There are also 10, 40ft trucks filled with equipment.

‘We have performers from Cuba, Columbia, Kenya, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

‘We do rehearsals back in the UK with a choreographer that takes around two weeks but the acts are all performers in their own right so they just slot in really,’ said Mr Price.

Weekday shows will take place at 4.45pm and 7.30pm.

Saturday show times will be the same with an extra show at 2pm and Sunday show times are at 12pm and 3pm.

Executive producer Carol Gandey said: ‘In an age of special effects created through complex digital technology for movies and videos, audiences really appreciate the incredible feats of physical achievement by circus superstars in a live performance happening right in front of them.’
