The man was one of a team working to fit new fridges into a shop owned by the CI Co-op on the Bridge, St Sampson's, and which is due to become a Locale store.

'We are aware that an incident occurred during the installation of fridge equipment to the new store and our over-riding thoughts are with the individual, and the family, affected,' said CI Co-operative Society chief executive officer Colin Macleod.

'The HSE are carrying out a full investigation and no further information is available at this time.’

St John Ambulance and Rescue, Fire and Rescue and the police attended after the alarm was raised at about 9.30am and the area was cordoned off.

The injured man was quickly removed from the scene and taken to the Emergency Department.

Police remained at the scene until representatives of Health and Safety arrived to begin their investigation.

A statement from the Health and Safety Executive said: ''Two HSE Inspectors attended the scene on Sunday morning with the police and a Scene of Crime Officer.

'Guernsey Police handed the scene over to HSE, and HSE now have primacy over the investigation.

'This is an active investigation and it would therefore not be appropriate for HSE to provide additional comments at this stage.'
