Pets have a day in Town at first Seafront Sunday of year

ANIMALS were the focus of the first Seafront Sunday of the year, when the GSPCA once again took over the seafront for what was its seventh time.

A misty day saw thousands of islanders head to Town yesterday, many of them accompanied by the family dog, for an event which was about twice the size of last year, said GSPCA manager Steve Byrne.

‘We have double the amount of stalls,’ he said.

‘We had 50 last year and this year we have about 100.’

Among the stalls were various charities, who were given a free pitch, food stands, the GSPCA’s own stalls and entertainment for children provided by Rainbow Day Care.

Another change was moving the main arena from the main road to the Crown Pier, which Mr Byrne said encouraged everyone to walk down there to see what was going on.

As in previous years, the main attractions were a family dog show and a mascots football match.

The dogs were judged by Anna Brehaut of Canine Behaviour Guernsey and were entered in such categories as best puppies, happiest pet, prettiest bitch/most handsome dog, ‘show us a trick’ and golden oldie.

An overall best in show winner was then chosen from the winners.

Among the hopefuls was Dave the Chinese crested, who was with his owners Tiffany De La Mare and her children Lily, 11, and Freddie, six.

‘We’ve been here loads of times, but this time we’ve entered the show,’ said Mrs De La Mare, adding that Dave had been entered into the category for most handsome dog.

Another entrant in the same class was Ty-Honi, a nine-year-old Utonagan.

Owner Vicky Forrest said the breed was developed from combining a Siberian husky with a German shepherd.

Ty-Honi was also going to enter into the friendliest animal class: ‘He’s very friendly with all dogs,’ said Mrs Forrest.

‘He was trained as a Pets For Therapy dog when we lived in the UK’.
