Largest solar array generates enough to power seven homes
GUERNSEY’S largest solar energy scheme has generated enough electricity to power seven homes for a year in the 50 days since the panels were installed.
Guernsey Electricity had hundreds of panels fitted on top of its premises on Northside. The work started in February and was completed by the end of March.
The project made the array the biggest bank of solar panels in the Channel Islands.
Supplied by The Little Green Energy company, the panels have already have been generating renewable energy to provide either seven average homes with heat, light and power for a whole year or for an electric car to drive for 100,000 miles.
Guernsey Electricity’s chief executive Alan Bates said the new solar array would diversify Guernsey’s power generating options as well as add to the existing on-island generating capacity.
‘As well as offering the opportunity to lower emissions, this renewable energy development will benefit all islanders because it feeds solar energy directly into Guernsey’s electricity network.
‘Every customer can be proud to say that a small proportion of their energy consumption is locally and renewably sourced,’ he said.
‘Guernsey Electricity continues to consider how advances in technology can benefit the island as a whole, and installing the solar array is an opportunity for us to see the impact first hand of renewable energy.’
Planning permission for the 100KW solar array was given in November 2017.
Guernsey Electricity’s Head of Energy Solutions, Vince Smith, said: ‘Our own commercial installation team working with The Little Green Energy Company was a great success. We had the right team, with the right skills, to deliver the work to a tight deadline.’
