Guernsey’s squad will join thousands of young dancers from over 50 countries in Sitges, Spain, later this week for the prestigious competition.

Rhianna King, principal of The Academy of Dance and Theatre Arts, said the island’s different dance schools had come together for the event.

‘The Academy of Dance and Theatre Arts, Guernsey Academy of Theatrical Education, KD Dance and Guernsey Gymnastics are all taking part but we are travelling as one team to represent the island,’ she said.

‘Travelling to Spain is a considerable expense as most of the youngsters are being accompanied by their parents and so the sponsorship from Ravenscroft has enabled us to provide the dancers and their teachers with an official team tracksuit so that we can represent Guernsey with pride.

‘The Dance World Cup is now the premiere dance competition in the world and it’s fantastic that an island as small as Guernsey has eighty dancers who met the very high qualifying standards. They have all been training so hard and are very excited that we are now so close to the competition.’

Dancers from across Europe and as far afield as Australia, America, Japan and South Africa are taking part in this year’s Dance World Cup which saw 12,000 dancers compete in the qualifiers.

Guernsey’s team captain is Jessica Quittenden from The Dance Academy, the flag bearer is Reece Kilminster from GATE and the mini mascot is Beatrice Wilson from KD Dance.

Sponsorship from Ravenscroft has provided team tracksuits to all the dancers and their teachers.

‘Ravenscroft is passionate about helping islanders reach their full potential and we focus much of our community support on enabling young people to get involved in sport and fulfil their ambition,’ said the group’s managing director, Mark Bousfield.

‘The dancers representing Guernsey at the Dance World Cup have spent hundreds of hours choreographing their routines and practising them until they are perfect and we wish them every success.’
