And there was no trouble, according to Guernsey Police.

England captain Harry Kane saved the nation’s blushes as he scored a 91st minute winner to give the three lions a win from their first group match against Tunisia.

The match was enjoyed across the island, including two events in St Peter Port at which money was raised for local charities.

Doyle Motors hosted a World Cup party, where 200 guests enjoyed a unique match experience.

Pre-match entertainment was provided by the Samba Burros band before the guests experienced a touchline view of the live game on giant screens.

The newly refurbished showroom was transformed for the evening into the Doyle Motors Stadium.

A spokesman for Doyle Motors said the event had worked very well, both for their guests and in terms of charitable fundraising.

‘Everyone really enjoyed it, it was a really good do.

‘We wanted to stage a World Cup party to remember, with the feel of a casual event for our guests to enjoy the Fifa World Cup, along with raising much-needed funds for Guernsey Alzheimer’s by holding a charitable auction at half time for a photograph depicting England’s celebrations after the victory in 1966.’

The signed photograph was donated by World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst.

Recruitment agency Alexander Daniels also held an event at Urban Kitchen which raised money through a half-time raffle, with proceeds going to Guernsey FC Soccer School.

Alexander Daniels Offshore Division director Andy Partlow said the event had been a great success.

‘It went really well, it was informal and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, it was a great event,’ he said.

‘It was a one-off, but people there were asking for more, so we may see what happens.’

With football fans likely celebrating into the night, Guernsey Police reported that no football supporter-related incidents took place.

The police issued a statement urging supporters to act responsibly whilst enjoying the World Cup.

Chief Inspector J-P Le Breton said: ‘We have issued guidance to all licensees ahead of the start of the 2018 Football World Cup and will be actively working with them to ensure a safe and successful tournament.

‘We would urge all supporters to have fun and enjoy the football, but to behave in a responsible manner and have respect for others whatever the outcome of the match in question.

‘Our priority is public safety and officers will be carrying out liquor licence visits throughout this period to ensure that everyone who goes out to watch the World Cup can enjoy doing so without fear of disorderly or intimidating behaviour.’
