Many pubs and bars were full to capacity with fans, who watched skipper Harry Kane scored a hat-trick to qualify for the knock-out stages.

One couple, Sue and Ashley Collins, were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Guernsey and had been told the White Hart was the place to be.

‘There’s a group of eight of us on the boat. My brother came as a surprise as well, it’s great. We’re all massive football fans, especially of Southampton Football Club so we had to come over because of Le Tissier,’ said Mrs Collins.

One of the group predicted a 4-0 win while another had placed a bet on Panama to win at 16-1.

Charity shop assistant Alex Cook came down to the pub just before kick-off and said he always came to the same one during the World Cup.

‘I think they’re going to win this game and hopefully we’ll qualify into the semi-finals. It’s a great atmosphere in here today,’ he said.

Another football fan said he had come down to cheer on England, despite it not being his home country.

‘It’s a good atmosphere, I am Latvian, but I support England,’ he said.
