Wailing sirens alerting local residents to an emergency in Town could be heard at around 8.30pm, with firefighters quickly at the scene to deal with the blaze at the building, believed to be made up of a number of flats.

At least two fire engines were at the scene with hoses snaking along the road as the firefighters tackled the blaze, which sent ash and shattered glass flying out of the property and onto the road. Firefighters appeared also to enter the property, with jets of water coming out of the badly damaged upper floor to damp down the fire.

A number of police officers were also deployed to the scene and a cordon set up around the affected area midway up Hauteville.

Smoke from the fire could also be seen across the evening sky drifting towards Sark, with the emergency services expected to be at the scene for several hours.

Burning embers could be seen through the damaged roof, which had been cut open by the fire.

Firefighters were working in teams to go into the building with breathing apparatus well into Monday night.
