The warning follows the latest fire attended by the Fire and Rescue Service yesterday afternoon, which was started by an spark from a bonfire nearby.

Temperatures in the high 20s were recorded yesterday and over the weekend, also prompting the Director of Public Health to issue warm weather advice, which included trying to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm.

Yesterday’s fire saw the service being called to privately-owned land behind Clos des Pecqueries, St Sampson’s, at 1.15pm.

Fire crews found an area of scrubland about 100m by 50m alight.

Two fire tenders attended the scene and two 45mm jets and a hose reel were used to bring the blaze under control before firefighters spent time damping down.

Crew commander Nick Affleck said that the fact that a disused quarry was right next to the land affected had helped prevent the blaze spreading further: ‘It was brought under control pretty quickly,’ he said.

The crews left the scene at about 3pm.

‘The advice we give is that if you don’t need to have a fire, then don’t have one,’ said Mr Affleck.

‘If you do, make sure you are monitoring it with a hose.’
