‘Very old’ L’Ancresse kiosk scores one star for hygiene

OLD infrastructure and a busy weekend led to a one-star food hygiene rating for L’Ancresse kiosk, according to its tenant.

Eight establishments in the Bailiwick are on that score in the latest Environmental Health list, which means ‘major improvement is necessary’. The ratings go from zero up to five.

Kiosk tenant Sandra Brassell took on the short lease earlier this year and is set to run the site until September.

The States-owned property is going to be removed and replaced with a new structure, following the decision to demolish 130m of anti-tank wall and let a dune form.

Mrs Brassell said it was a challenge working in the old structure, but its bleak future meant it was not worth investing in the building.

‘The floor really needs replacing, but I only have the kiosk until September,’ she said.

‘It’s a very old building.’

She said the kitchen sides were all kept clean and tidy, and the floor was swept. But she also struggled to do all the paperwork, as she works alone at the kiosk.

‘There is so much red tape,’ she said.

‘I know I should do it. I do check the freezers, but I am not keeping big quantities [of] ice-cream. Yesterday [Sunday] I sold eight large [4.5 litre] tubs of ice-cream.’

She said she was having to constantly re-order. She added the inspectors had visited at an unfortunate time – just after a very busy weekend where she had sold 17 tubs of ice-cream.

She said overall she had been really well-supported by islanders, who had flocked to try her unusual ice-cream flavours, which include peanut butter jelly and lemon meringue.

She said she planned to invite the health inspectors back soon.

The kiosk was inspected on 10 July.
