Green Hut ‘is a little institution’

AN OFFICE worker and a used car salesman couple, now running the Green Hut in St Martin’s, have reassured regulars that nothing will change.

The locally-renowned takeaway and betting shop, formally named Ephgrave Stores, was run by the same family for decades until just last month.

When it was announced the business was up for sale in October members of the public were keen to impress how much they would like it to keep the same menu and atmosphere.

‘I came storming in one day, usually it’d be: “I’ve got a new car for you”, this time it was: “we’re going to buy the Green Hut”.

‘I did a bit of outdoor catering many moons ago. Sarah is brilliant with people, though, and I knew she would fit right in,’ said Clint McGrath who now co-owns the business with fiance Sarah Barsby.

‘I was working in finance and when I had my middle daughter I was working from home, said Ms Barsby.

‘As they all got older I was looking for work again and when this came up it was at the perfect time. I’ve always wanted my own business having worked for people with their own business for so long.’

The couple admit they have ‘big boots to fill’.

‘This is a little institution. Not only is the food magnificent but a lot of people came here to see Fran [Winterburn, former owner].

‘Rather than us buying a new business we’re lucky it’s already so loved,’ said Ms Barsby.

The small takeaway is famous for its large portions and unusual specials, such as the deluxe chicken wrap.

‘It’s fast food but we also want the quality to remain the same,’ said Mr McGrath.

The Green Hut’s usual opening hours are 7am-3pm Monday-Sunday.
