Cracks are clearly visible in Bulwer Avenue. A resurfacing project is expected to take five weeks, but the road will remain open under traffic lights.

It is part of Traffic and Highway Services’ annual programme.

Work will start on Monday 3 September, with repairs to the base layers and resetting ironwork and kerbs taking the most time.

‘In order to minimise disruption to the public, contractors will be working seven days a week and will be largely carrying out the work under traffic lights to allow the road to remain open,’ a spokesman said.

‘Bulwer Avenue has reached the end of its service life, with cracking in the road clearly visible in areas and the stone barely holding together in places.

‘More than 500 metres of this wide road will be resurfaced in just the first part of the project, from Grandes Maison Road through to Longue Hougue Lane. Patching will then take place over several hundred more metres on the northern half of Bulwer Avenue from Longue Hougue Lane to extend the life of this half of the road.’

The project could have been completed quicker, but that would have required the total closure of the road. ‘Traffic and Highway Services works hard to minimise the inconvenience to road users and did not believe this was the best option.

‘Drivers should plan for some delays to be expected, with additional time allowed.

‘Traffic and Highway Services would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience while these improvements are carried out.

‘Once complete, people will notice a clear improvement in this important road.’
