Finance sector ‘has around 1,000 vacancies’

THERE are around 1,000 vacancies in the finance sector, with demand for staff picking up strongly compared with last year, according to a recruitment specialist.

Melissa Campbell, director at Situations, said that businesses were looking for staff at all levels – particularly in compliance roles.

‘There are maybe around 1,000 office vacancies at any one time.

‘Some can be filled directly before they come to the outside world,’ she said.

‘It is very buoyant. July has been our biggest month for permanent and contract placements.

‘The main areas are trust, funds and accounting, but particularly compliance, which is a growing area and will only increase further.’

Organisations were looking for people with transferable skills including at senior levels, she said, with Situations launching a new online service – Situation Executives – aimed at this top-tier sector.

‘There are opportunities. They don’t always reach the outside world so for us to have a database of senior executives, we can move quickly,’ said Mrs Campbell.

‘Senior candidates are understandably concerned about confidentiality, particularly in a small employment market such as Guernsey’s. Also, they generally do not wish to register with a recruitment agency until they are sure that a vacancy is suitable for their career aspirations.’

A total of 300 islanders were unemployed at the end of June 2018, a reduction of 21 when compared with the same point last year.
