Some 80% of students achieved five or more grades 4-9 (equivalent to GCSE grades A*-C) including English and maths, said principal Robert O’Brien, who was very happy with this year’s results.

‘Blanchelande prides itself in delivering the best results for students with a wide ability range. With an increased proportion of the coveted top grades (7-9), we feel that teachers and students have managed the transition to the new, more rigorous GCSE system with great success.’

With a 5% increase on last year’s results, Blanchelande’s results reveal that, for a second successive year, 38% of students achieved the top scores (grades 7-9, equivalent A*/A).

Lily-Mae Zheng was surprised to achieve some of the best results in the school.

‘I wasn’t expecting that, I was a bit worried with the new gradings.

‘I just wasn’t expecting my further maths grade.’

Leah Langmead was ecstatic with her grades. ‘I didn’t think I’d passed psychology. I got an E in my mock and thought the E was creeping back, but I got a B. The exams were quite hard but I felt they went quite well.’

Like Leah, Emma Avery has chosen to go on to the Sixth Form Centre.

‘There is a lot more variety in the subjects there and more people, especially coming from Blanchelande, where we have 36 people in the year,’ she said.

Achieving 7-9 grades in every exam was Emma Brown.

‘I had no idea, the exams were really difficult but I feel good, yeah.’

Emma is also heading to the Sixth Form Centre where she will study geography, English literature and biology.

Megan Lane, who is currently competing in the UK, achieved a 9 in six subjects and an 8 in the remaining four.

A mother who was there to support her daughter but did not want to be named said: ‘We are delighted, absolutely delighted.

‘Feeling brilliant because she has got to where she wants to be.’
