Principal Sophie Roughsedge said the school had been moving away from BTecs to focus on more academic subjects.

‘This is the first cohort with their results,’ she said.

‘Where we are really pleased is with the sciences. A quarter of the students have done triple science, which is fantastic. It’s been a big change.’

In each of the science subjects, more than 80% of students got A* to C. The maths and English results saw more than 70% getting A* to C.

Art was another strong subject, with 92% getting A* to C.

One of the pupils celebrating their art grade was 16-year-old Morgan Tough.

She said she was really pleased with her A* in art and B in psychology.

‘Those were the two subjects I chose and was most interested in and spent the most time on,’ she said.

She is going on to study A-levels in art and design, physics and psychology.

Libby De Carteret, 16, was pleased with her grades.

‘I am most pleased with my art, where I got a 9,’ she said.

The pupils also did well in their Btecs. Nearly 90% of students got the equivalent of A* to C in music, with 100% getting the grades in business studies.

Zack Trimmer, 16, said he was thrilled with his distinction in music, where he used his skills on the guitar and his vocals.

‘It was tough,’ he said.

‘I had to work hard.’

He was also very relieved to see he had got a C in history.

‘In the mocks I got an F, so I have worked hard,’ he said.
