Recovering the Trawl? taken by keen amateur photographer Dave Agnelli, has been highly commended in the people category of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society’s 2018 photo competition.

The image, Recovering the Trawl, was taken by keen amateur local photographer Dave Agnelli, 76.

He said he was really pleased that the image had been highly commended in the people category of the competition.

‘It was a surprise,’ he said.

‘I looked at some of the entries and they are very good. So this is really exciting.’

The main image was taken a couple of years ago, when Mr Agnelli was working on a fishing project.

He was given permission to go aboard Peter Le Cheminant’s boat, Amy Blue.

He said the men aboard the board were very welcoming, but were working in tough stormy conditions, as they tried to catch rays and flatfish between Sark and Herm.

‘They would go out there on their own, in awful conditions,’ Mr Agnelli said.

‘I had to get my sea legs back from when I was in the Navy. I had to keep out of their way, because it is quite dangerous work. The two lads were brilliant while I was snapping away. It was a really interesting day.’

As the sky was quite dull in the original picture, he swapped it for a sunset shot he had taken previously of the Hanois.

He said he still needed to tell the fishermen about how well the image has done.

Almost 1,000 entries were entered for the competition. The winning and highly commended images have gone on to be published in a number of national newspapers.
