New 25mph zones backed amid public opposition

Proposals to introduce a series of new 25mph speed limits have been approved by Environment & Infrastructure.

Environment & Infrastructure has supported a series of speed limit reductions to 25mph.

A public consultation it held showed that 55% of those who responded where against the changes, which include Braye Road and Glategeny Esplanade.

The limits broadly cover all local centres and main centre outer areas identified in the Island Development Plan

'The committee recognises that these changes will not be popular with all in our community, but it is also important to recognise that they will be welcomed by many who either feel vulnerable using our roads or live on roads that will be positively impacted by a reduction in speed,' said E&I president Barry Brehaut.

He emphasised that there is extensive evidence that vulnerable road users are and - as importantly - feel safer in busy community areas when traffic speeds are slower.

The changes will come into effect later this year.

Full details will be included in tomorrow's Guernsey Press.
