However, now they have the resources to take on more pets in such circumstances.

Founder Sue Vidamour wants pet owners to be aware that if they have a medical emergency and cannot afford for their pet to be looked after, the GAA’s team of volunteers will house the pet and look after it for as long as necessary.

‘The worst thing for me would be for someone that is ill to worry about their pets, you already have enough worries when you’re unwell,’ Mrs Vidamour said.

‘For some people their whole life changes when they have a pet and it means the absolute world to them. They need somewhere to take the pet if they have to go to hospital for whatever reason.’

Although she wants to make islanders aware of the pet care service, Mrs Vidamour did not want the charity to be taken advantage of and asked that it is only when an owner cannot afford a kennel or cattery that the GAA is required.

‘We are not a business, we are a charity with all volunteers, so if people can afford to put their pets in different care they should. We are here to help when that is not the case.’

She added: ‘But the last thing we want is for people who are ill to not get treatment or go into care because they are worried about what will happen to their pet.’
