It is part of Baby Loss Awareness Week and was organised by Guernsey Sands – Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society.

Sands event organiser Chloe Gallie said the illumination was part of the Wave of Light, a global initiative taking place between 7 and 8pm on Monday, during which parents who had lost a baby lit a candle. As the world turned through different time zones, the lit candles would move around the world.

Mrs Gallie said it was important.

‘I think for a lot of people, they remember their babies who are not here with them any more, but it can feel like they are the only ones who remember,’ she said.

‘So this [illumination] is such a poignant symbol, because it shows we all remember those babies. It’s a big deal.’

Mrs Gallie said the society was very grateful to St James for granting permission for the special illumination.
