The incident happened around 2.30pm and saw both drivers needing hospital treatment.

All three emergency services attended and the scene was cordoned-off by police officers.

There were passengers on the CT Plus bus at the time of the collision and it is thought some took themselves to hospital.

The road was still closed until after 6pm, leading to major rush hour traffic delays as people tried to travel out of Town.

Some tried using lanes to access the road and had to be turned back, leading to a warning from police.

Police said they were unsure of the cause of the crash, which happened at the junction of Route de Sausmarez and Le Vardin.

‘Both the driver of the bus and the driver of the car were taken to A&E,’ said Sergeant Andy Smith. ‘One has minor injuries and the other is being assessed.’

He said both vehicles were being assessed and investigated. When they were being looked at, the car and bus were on the same side of the road.

The car was a blue Kia. The roof was cut off the vehicle.

Considerable damage and denting to the bonnet of the car was caused while the front windscreen of the bus was cracked and some windows were smashed.

The bus was travelling north on Route de Sausmarez and the car was travelling south, Sgt Smith added.

They had spoken with bus passengers but he asked for witnesses to come forward.

‘There were a number of passengers on the bus but anyone who left the scene before the police arrived should please get in touch,’ he said.

At 5.10pm, the road was open to pedestrians but still closed to traffic. Both the car and the bus were towed away by recovery vehicles.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police on 725111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

n A CT Plus spokesman said they could not comment due to the investigation.
