The Swan pontoon in The Pool was overturned by the strong winds and damaged beyond repair.

Guernsey Harbours maintenance engineers removed the pontoon from its fixing buoys in the harbour earlier this week and, with the use of the harbour work boat Sarnia and its dory, it was towed to the Careening Hard before it was hauled to the top of the beach and broken up.

The non-slip surface boards were removed before the excavator started work and will be used on other pontoons in the future.

The pontoon used to float outside the Victoria Marina and was used by visiting yachts.

‘Guernsey Harbours has a rolling programme of repair, replacement and maintenance of our pontoons and we are confident the new pontoon will be in place for the start of the 2019 tourist season,’ a spokesman said.

‘We do not anticipate any challenges will be created to berthing capacity by the loss of the pontoon following the recent storm.’
