La Vrangue reopens with two new crossings
TWO new zebra crossings have been installed in La Vrangue, which is due to reopen today as the project to widen the road is completed.
The wall of La Vrangue Manor has been moved back about a metre to make it possible for motorists emerging from Guelles Road to turn right without mounting the pavement.
In addition, the junction of Rue Thomas has been enlarged to help vehicles turning into it.
Also, a section of road by Balmoral Estate has been widened to ensure it follows the layout of the newly-expanded section further up.
Traffic and Highway Services said that it was pleased the developers of the site have worked with it to widen this narrow section at no expense to the public.
The two new crossings are by Balmoral Estate, to help residents of Millbrook Estate and others cross the road safely at this point, and at the bottom of Guelles Road, to provide a safer route for pedestrians, especially children heading to Amherst School.
Additional lighting has been installed by Guernsey Electricity at the crossings, and tactile paving has also been installed at the crossing points.
Traffic and Highway Services said that tactile paving is now used at all new zebra and signal crossings to assist people with impaired vision, and this is also being used more and more at other crossing points with dropped kerbs.
La Vrangue resident and St Peter Port douzenier Katina Jones welcomed the new crossings.
‘I have been very keen to see safer crossing points on this busy road and am very pleased that there will now be two new zebra crossings to help people using the road, especially walking their children to Amherst School,’ she said.
‘It was not always easy crossing from Guelles Road onto the pavement at La Vrangue and the longer pavement and zebra crossing should help us.’
Guernsey Electricity staff will remain on scene with a minor obstruction at the side of the road for final works to commission the new substation.
