‘It felt like being awarded an Oscar’

WINNING the St Peter Port Decorated Christmas Window competition felt like being awarded an Oscar, the co-owner of Wink At One said.

After a four-year hiatus, the competition has been relaunched in a low-key manner by the St Peter Port Christmas Lights charity.

‘The last winner in 2014 was Creasey’s department store. We had the permission from members of what was the Guernsey Town Traders’ Association to re-instate the competition,’ said charity founder Jax Robin.

The jewellers featured fresh foliage, woollen snowballs and ceramic creatures in their festive window.

Three judges deemed the premises the best example of making a display of goods on sale attractive and informative.

‘Our first thought was just, “that is amazing” it shows off the products beautifully.

‘We want this to bring more people to Town in the future to see the entrants, it’s about making people smile,’ she said.

The shop has been in its current location next to Boots since 2015 and regularly changes the frontage to attract both customers and browsers.

‘When we were told we’d won a competition we didn’t even know we had entered it felt like winning at the Oscars. We really enjoy it and put a lot of effort in.

‘The sign-writing is done by my daughter, and our shop manager Lucy Sweet spent hours making snowballs, the Blue Peter way. It can be difficult being here because people come straight out of Boots and down Le Pollet and sometimes don’t notice us.

‘We love people coming in just to have a look, I wasn’t happy until someone else came in just to say they loved the window display,’ said co-owner Lizzie Jarrold.

Another commended business in the competition was the Rose Bowl florists near the bus terminus.

The St Peter Port Christmas Window Display trophy will now be on show at the jewellers, inscribed with previous winners dating back to 1922.
