Year 4 pupils have been learning all about India this term, and the project was rounded-off with a special trip to the College of Further Education to learn about Indian cooking.

Year 4 teacher Justine Curtis said the pupils had been making a butter chicken curry, chana saag, pilau rice and a lassi yoghurt drink.

‘It’s about helping them understand the culture and the food and why they use so many spices,’ she said.

‘They have been absolutely loving it. It’s a fantastic experience.’

This is the first time the lessons have been held.

‘While Castel School does have a kitchen, it is too small for a class session. So working with the College of Further Education meant that pupils could use the Coutanchez Campus kitchens. Mrs Curtis said they were also very grateful to Julie Hyde, who had led the class.

Francoise Bichard, nine, has tried eating Indian food before with her mum, but this was her first time making it.

‘It’s been interesting,’ she said.

‘I got to chop food and add spices.’

Sophia Reeves, eight, said she had been having a great morning.

‘I got to chop up some really nice foods, like apples, bananas and tomatoes,’ she said.

‘I have had Indian food once – it was quite spicy. But I am looking forward to trying out the food. It’s been good.’
