A SIXTH seal pup was rescued by the GSPCA on Saturday, and the service is now caring for more of the animals than ever before.

Hannah was recovered from near the Fairy Ring at Pleinmont, and when found was emaciated and about half the weight she should be. There was no sign of her mother.

The pup was taken to the animal shelter, where she joined five others that the charity has rescued in recent weeks.

Although some 15 years ago the GSPCA recovered six pups in a short period of time, they were all sent to the UK. Now all the rescued pups are rehabilitated locally.

Hannah is now receiving round-the-clock care.

Older seal pups, such as Marty, are fast approaching release date and it is planned for them to be back in the wild soon

‘We are hugely grateful to the member of public who called in, seeing the poorly seal pup,’ said GSPCA animal collection officer and head of marine mammals Geoff George.

‘It is the latest grey seal pup we have ever rescued in the season, but it’s been surprising as we’ve had a few calls both here and in Jersey of late pups that have needed looking at.’

n The GSPCA is appealing for donations towards the care of the pups.
