There are 30 teams of students from the Grammar School, La Mare de Carteret and St Sampson’s High Schools taking part in the three-month challenge.

Each was given £100 and asked to make as much profit as they can.

Challenge co-ordinator Lydia Chambers said it had been going really well.

Among the stallholders was Jasmine Peach and Megan Buckholt, both 12, from La Mare de Carteret, who were in a group with two friends. They collected sea glass to make into necklaces and so far have made £185.

‘We have sold about 50 pieces,’ Jasmine said. ‘We went to beaches and collected the glass. It took quite a while.’

They have decided to give 50% of their profits to Cancer Research.

La Mare teacher Ben Stubbs said he had seen how the challenge had really benefitted pupils.

‘A lot of students have really come out of their shells,’ he said.

‘It is something they have done out of school hours and they have done on their own. Some plan to continue after the challenge.’

Holly Toms and Mya Le Cheminant, both 12, from St Sampson’s, decided to make candles. They were inspired by a YouTube video to make candles out of drinks bottles and used coloured wax, so they looked like the real bottles.

‘They were quite hard to make,’ Holly said.

‘When we had to cut them out the bottle, we had to be very careful.’

They said the challenge had been going quite well and they had been enjoying taking part in the market.

They have decided to donate 25% of their profits to the Anthony Nolan Trust.

The event is being supported by Barclays, EY, Ogier and Sure.

This year’s contestants are trading from January to March and selling handmade craft items, mugs, key rings and gifts as they compete to become the overall winner of the Channel Islands Student Business Challenge 2019.
