Support gathering for art venue idea at tourism centre
A PROPOSAL for an art venue in the tourist information building has gained support from a wide range of the community,
It is one of the projects that has been shortlisted in part of the seafront enhancement scheme being run by the States, but faces competition from a hotel and casino concept.
Those offering endorsement of the arts venue idea include head of Heritage Services and Guernsey Museums Dr Jason Monaghan.
‘I am wholly supportive of raising the cultural bar in Guernsey and building a reputation for the island as an arts destination. There is a need for a stand-out modern tourist attraction in St Peter Port and a focus for Guernsey’s creative community.’
The art centre proposal was made by Art for Guernsey and its chairman David Ummels.
Former president of the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce Martyn Dorey said: ‘Guernsey must be that bold and creative competitor working from first principles to develop a strong brand on the global stage. We shared his [Mr Ummels] view of the positive impact that an iconic art venue could bring to the local economy.’
The art venue, supporters believe, would bring both economic and cultural benefits to islanders.
St Peter Port constable Dennis Le Moignan said: ‘I have no doubt in my mind that it [art venue] would increase the number of visitors to our beautiful island and at the same time give locals a rare opportunity to view wonderful works of art which many might never see if this were not to happen.’
Town Centre Partnership executive officer Jack Honeybill echoed those sentiments: ‘Utilising such an iconic building in St Peter Port has not only cost ramifications but a potential attraction in the Town to encourage footfall. The promotion of the arts is a vital part of our culture.’
What is evident among supporters of the art venue is the lack of similar opportunity available on island currently.
The promotion of arts is key but must be addressed with careful provision, say supporters – the centre must be established effectively so it becomes the island asset it has the potential to be.
Arts Commission chairman Trevor Wakefield said: ‘Mr Ummels’ proposal is exciting on many fronts.
‘The scope of vision for the art venue is bigger than anything we have seen in the past and will be an exciting addition to the Guernsey scene.
‘Most importantly, it is a viable proposal with a well-structured financing plan.’
The States had asked for ideas on what could happened with six sites it owns in Town.
A total of 15 schemes were shortlisted for the areas which were also at La Vallette and the kiosk there, Vivier Bunker, North Plantation and the Round Top Stores.
The aim is to begin work on one of the sites this year.
