Guernsey Police are warning women not to walk home alone at night, after a woman had to flee a man in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Guernsey Police are hoping that anyone who witnesses the incident might help them identify the attacker.

It is understood that the lone female left Les Folies D’Amour nightclub at about 2.20am on Sunday.

She turned left onto Le Pollet before walking up La Plaiderie, past the police station and then up Hospital Lane.

She then realised a male, wearing dark clothing, was following her.

At the top of the hill she crossed St Julian’s Avenue and continued walking up Candie Road.

The male continued to follow her and began making sexual remarks.

She removed her shoes and ran away in the direction of Elm Grove.

The male chased her, caught up with her and then touched her inappropriately.

The female was able to escape and was uninjured.

Police Officer Kieran Walsh said they were looking into the matter.

‘A number of officers are working hard to identify the male in question, including reviewing CCTV we have access to,’ he said.

‘If anyone has anything they think can help – including dashcam footage, private CCTV or saw or heard anything suspicious, I urge them to get in contact. What seems trivial to you could be the key bit of information for us to find out who this man is.’

He said that two taxis drove past the female as she was walking up Candie Road at roughly 2.30am and the police are keen to speak to the drivers.

‘I would stress these incidents are extremely rare in Guernsey, but what we want to make sure is that the “how am I safely getting home?” conversation is part of your going-out routine,’ Officer Walsh said.

‘Our advice is to walk home with someone you trust, stay within well-lit areas, message your friends when you get back safely, and have easy access to your phone.

‘There are free safety apps for your phone, including Hollie Guard, which we would recommend.’
