The quarry would need to be developed 'in a sustainable and safe way' while respecting the environment around the site and it would provide aggregate for 33 years or more.

Chouet was identified as a site for potential quarrying in the Strategic Land Use Plan of 2011 and the Island Development Plan of 2016, the latter designating it as a safeguarded area for possible mineral extraction.

'The potential for mineral extraction on the island is limited,' said the Planning Service.

'Les Vardes Quarry, the only active quarry, has limited stone reserves left. After all these reserves are extracted, Guernsey would be reliant upon imported aggregates to meet all construction industry needs unless a new quarry is established.'

The area of the site is about 8.5 hectares (51 vergees) and currently contains facilities, including the weighbridge, for Mont Cuet tip, the green waste site, bring bank facilities, historic structures, a car park and part of the coastal path which runs along the south, west and northern boundaries.

The DPA is now inviting comments on the framework. These can be submitted by email to planning@gov.gg or in writing over the next eight weeks.

  • The draft development Framework can be view on the States of Guernsey website at www.gov.gg/developmentframeworks or at the Planning Service Reception at Sir Charles Frossard House. All responses and comments should be received by 5pm on Friday 7 June.
