Ruth Berry was 109 when she passed away at Summerland Nursing Home on Saturday night.

Mrs Berry was also the 24th oldest person in the UK at the time of her death.

She was born in Guernsey in 1909 and married Ken Berry.

During the Second World War, the family was evacuated to Lancashire with their children, Ken, Paul and Roger, and later moved to Cornwall, where her husband joined the RAF and their fourth child, Marilyn, was born.

They returned to Guernsey after the war and moved to Le Becquet Farm in St Martin’s, where they ran a campsite and self-catering business.

Mrs Berry was heavily involved with the church and lived at home until a couple of years ago. She was closely involved in charity work right up until her death and was a grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother.

Her funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.

The news comes just five months after Guernsey’s second oldest resident, Clara Jehan, died, aged 108.
