The Watoto Church is based in Uganda and works to support orphans and vulnerable women.

The children’s choir has travelled extensively since 1994. The aim is to raise awareness of the causes, as well as boost the confidence of the young people.

Eighteen children from the choir, aged between seven and 12, travelled to Guernsey last week perform at local churches, as well as in Market Square. The children have all lost one or both of their parents, which has resulted in them needing the group’s help.

Team leader Tonny Mwesigwa said they were about halfway through a six-month tour of the UK, Netherlands and Belgium. He said the group’s work was important.

‘We look after them and make sure they get an education,’ he said.

‘Back in Uganda we train for about five months before going on the road. The biggest thing they get out of this is their confidence.’

While on the road the children are home schooled and Mr Mwesigwa said the children had their exams in two weeks’ time.

Among the performers was 11-year-old Kim Ibrahim.

‘I enjoy seeing people move and I enjoy seeing people enjoy themselves,’ he said.

All money raised by the choir goes back into the charity’s work.
