Not all Market Street traders keen on look of new flagstones
SOME businesses along Market Street are unenthusiastic about new paving along the road.
But Traffic & Highway Services says it is very pleased with the overall positive reaction being shown towards the project, which is now in its second phase.
One local business owner said they were not keen on the new look.
‘They have got the flag stones from China and Portugal, so it’s not even all from Guernsey,’ they said.
‘I’m not a fan, I don’t know who designed it but I think they’ve made more work for themselves. It’s not hideous, but it’s not great. The lady next door hates it.’
The improvements are being made to enable a safer area for pedestrians, which is easier for people with disabilities to use, as well as those with pushchairs or wearing high heels.
A Traffic & Highway Services spokesman said the works at Market Street to support the area in the long-term were progressing well.
‘Phase one of the works, from Market Square to halfway along the Market building, has already been completed.
‘Phase two, to the end of the Market building, is now well under way,’ they said.
‘The final phase will see an area resembling a square created at the Mill Street and Market Street junction.’
A quote from Victor Hugo about Guernsey will be installed at the centre of the square, along with additional seating.
Another business owner along the path said they thought it might look better once completed.
‘I think it will be lovely when it’s finished,’ they said.
‘Though I think the money could have been better spent elsewhere.
‘It would have been great if there were more local businesses or restaurants that could use the area but there isn’t many along this stretch.’
Local businesses were eager for the work to finish so that more customers would be willing to visit.
‘If the area is more accessible it is more likely that people will be able to get to us,’ the business owner said.
Traffic & Highway Services recently tweeted a picture of the updates, which said traditional local colours will be used at regular intervals, as well as at the accessible crossing points, opposite the steps.
Thanking businesses and members of the public for their patience during the improvement works, the spokesman said: ‘We are very pleased with the positivity towards this project, which will deliver a safer, more attractive and accessible Market Street.’
