With just over a year to go until the next election, some deputies have already been announcing their intentions for the first island-wide voting campaign.

Eight deputies have confirmed they will definitely be standing, including mother of the house and Vale Deputy Mary Lowe. She will be joined on the ballot paper by Marc Leadbeater, Andrea Dudley-Owen, Neil Inder, Charles Parkinson, Jeremy Smithies, Rhian Tooley and Carl Meerveld.

A quarter of the house have said they have not yet decided their position, with many saying they will wait until the winter to announce their next move.

Just five have said they will definitely be standing down from politics.

Two of them – Richard Graham, who is in his late 70s, and Barry Paint, who is 72 – have cited their age as the reason for their decision.

Environment & Infrastructure president Barry Brehaut, who has represented the people of St Peter Port south since 2004, confirmed he is not planning to stand, but would not give a reason for his decision.

After two terms in politics, Employment & Social Security president Michelle Le Clerc also confirmed she would be leaving politics.

‘I want to spend time with my family and explore other opportunities,’ she said.

West deputy Shane Langlois had returned to the house in 2016 after a four year break. But he said he thought that this was good time to retire.

Five deputies have not committed to standing, but have indicated they might.

They include Education, Sport & Culture president Matt Fallaize, former Development & Planning Authority president John Gollop and Policy & Resource member Al Brouard.

Apart from Deputy Brouard, none of the Policy & Resource committee - the States most senior political board - have indicated whether they will be standing.

The general election will be held on Wednesday 17 June 2020. It will be an island-wide vote, with islanders having up to 38 votes to vote in 38 deputies for a four-year term.
