The Committee for Environment & Infrastructure has agreed to propose a ban on the bags – with discussions with retailers now set to be held.

News of the proposed ban was set out by E&I president Barry Brehaut.

‘The committee for the Environment and Infrastructure agreed at its last meeting to propose a ban on single use plastic bags. The committee will now liaise with retailers to discuss the practicalities and timetable of the move,' said Deputy Brehaut in a post on Twitter.

More than 40 countries have already banned plastic bags- with other nations and jurisdictions planning to follow suit. Last August, New Zealand announced that it would ban single-use plastic bags over a 12-month period with retailers given six months to phase out the bags or face fines of up to NZ$100,000 (£51,000).
